WDS stands for Wireless Distribution System. It allows multiple routers to connect wirelessly to each other thus extending the network. WDS is not strictly standardized thus if you have linksys, you may find you can only use WDS to other linksys routers, access points etc. It does work well when setup properly. (There will be a slight speed loss to computers connected to the "second" or "third" routers.)

To use it you have to put the MAC (hardware address) of each router that you want connected into the opposite routers WDS settings. Once they are entered the two routers become like one -- repeating the wireless connection in different locations. Really just makes a wireless "bridge" between different routers and access points.
Here is a great "information" article

And here is Cisco's information -- detail

This router can be made WDS compatible with the addition of dd-wrt software from http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php

In fact with that software/firmware that router will do alot of things that the load from Linksys will not!
