Could be a chipmunk, a gopher, a raccoon, a skunk, a rat, or any of a variety of animals.

We have chipmunks (aka ground squirrels) that dig around everything in our yard. It could be the same thing for you. It could also be moles or some other rodents. See if you can get a look at them. If you never see anything then they could be digging around at night, or they could be moles or rodents that live underground.

depending on the area in which you live, this could be anything from a gopher, pocket gopher, vole or rabbit. Probably a rodent of some kind. Try a trap or chemical poison.

Cat, dog, raccoon, or opossum probably. If you put out poison or a trap you could kill or injure a pet or neighbor's pet.
