The author was 1 of the 1st profilers to work for the F.B.I. It was just after Hoover died. He writes these 2 books as almost a autobiography and I'm sure in his book at the start he has a heart attack. Then obviously talks about all the cases he has worked on. I'm not sure but think the front cover to 1 of the books has like a silver F.B.I shield on it. They where really popular books about 10 years ago. Really great books and would love to get my hands on them but cannot remember the names of them or the author

Mindhunter enters the minds of some of the country's most notorious serial killers to tell the real-life story of the Investigative Support Unit (ISU) -- the FBI's special force that has assisted state and local police in cracking some of the country's most celebrated serial murder and rape cases. The unit specializes in understanding the chemistry and mechanical workings of the brain's of these serial criminals, and did its homework by interviewing such murderers as Charles Manson and David Berkowitz (the Son of Sam). John Douglas, who worked for the FBI for 25 years, is an authority on the unit, and his book combines the best of nonfiction with that of a murder mystery. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly
Douglas, who developed criminal profiling techniques for the FBI, teams up with novelist Olshaker to tell of his 25-year career tracking down serial killers.

Or maybe this guy?

"In basement offices three stories below the ground at the FBI's Academy in Quantico, Virginia, former Supervisory Agent Gregg McCrary was among the first generation of the most elite force for criminal investigation in the world."

Dear Bookworm,
I don't think it could be Van Zandt; he was a hostage negotiator, not a profiler:

"Van Zandt, an early FBI specialist in hostage negotiation, shuns the fireworks his fictional Hollywood counterparts can't seem to avoid .. "

Possibly the book is "Facing Down Evil" by Clint Van Zandt. This book has a photo of a badge on the cover. It's being sold at Amazon for $4.99. Here's a link with more info: http://www.amazon.com/Facing-Down-Evil-Clint-Zandt/dp/039915308X

Happy reading to you! :-)

I tried FBI and profiler in my source but got nothing on profiler and just the bad news on Hoover there. You could look on any shelf of books of "true crime" and maybe find it, or further into FBI post-Hoover (though he cut a wide and lasting swath!)

Here are links I found but didn't try:
for FBI history, practices, and more:

(free registration is required)

http://www.fbi.gov/
for history and high-profile current cases

http://www.fbi.gov/mostwant/to
for some history with a current most wanted list.

Good luck!
