Best player who ever spent time with the Cubs: Rogers Hornsby or Jimmie Foxx, though let the record show that neither was particularly distinguished during their Chicago tenures. Hornsby was only with the team four seasons (1929-32), only played one full season and one 2/3 season, the other two were quite brief (42 and 19 games), and the two short seasons were not very good (certainly not up to his own lofty standard). Foxx made a cameo in 1942 and '44, total of 85 games, and even for career-ending time it was almost embarrassing.
Best player as a Cub: Cap Anson. Reportedly not a very nice person but simply a devastating player at the plate and in the field. Consistently among the league leaders (top ten, usually top five) in nearly all of the good hitting categories.

Definitley Ernie Banks. Hes not named Mr. Cub for show. 512 homers.

I say ERNIE BANKS....19 years for the Cubs. .274 average, 512 homers, 1,600 some RBIs, over 2,500 hits. And I don't believe his team ever the post season, but you'd never hear him whine or ***** about it. Always played hard

There are quite a few good ones: Billy Williams. Fergie Jenkens, Ryne Sandberg, Ron Santo, Big Lee Smith -- and many many more. But only one best:
Ernie Banks
First short stop with great HR power, positive image for the game, 'Let's play two', 500 HRs, on and on and on.

everyone keeps saying ernie banks, well yea, that's easy. but no one has mentioned the other mr. cub, ronnie santo. he's one of the game's greatest 3rd basemen ever and it's a joke he's not in the hall of fame.
