it's so that people feel better about themselves when in reality its the food that makes you fat not the drink

It isn't necessarily about "saving" calories. There are so many people in this country who are diabetic. Just like everyone else, they sometimes have to grab a meal on the run. That means a burger, small fries, and DIET drink. In their case it isn't about saving the extra calories, it's about not pushing the carb count too high so they maintain a balanced glucose reading.
I had gestational diabetes with all three of my children. Eating on the run is NOT the best idea, but sometimes it was the only way to get lunch in. That meant a Whopper Jr with no mayo and extra lettuce & tomatoes, a small fry, and a DIET soda. And of course after acquiring a taste for diet soda, I now always order diet, regardless of whether I have a salad or a burger.
I hope that helps you understand the concept of why some of us have to order that way! :-)

Because some people actually like the taste of Diet Coke better than any other soda- like ME!
By the way, ordering a diet soda may seem silly when eating your average high calorie meal, BUT it DOES save about 12 teaspoons of sugar and about 200 calories- it's not much, but every little bit helps and it's better for your teeth, too

Some people genuinely like the taste of diet better (personally I think it's awful) or they're diabetic, in which case they can not have the natural sugars that are in regular soda. Or some people feel better about the calories they're saving by not drinking regular soda. I guess every individual is different. I'd rather have a regular coke or dr. pepper anyday though!

I always wondered the same thing as you. Working in a fast food place I became aquainted with some of the regulars and asked them the same very question and most of them told me that they like the taste better than regular soda, not as sweet. Only a very small percentage stated that they figured ordering a diet soda would take away some of the guilt they felt by ordering such a greasy fattening meal. go figure huh!

Some people just prefer the taste of diet soda over that of regular soda. And maybe since they're already consuming 1000+ calories, they want to conserve those 150 for something else.

Every calorie counts. 2 Whoopers is worse than 1. Eating fast food for 3 meals is worse than just 1 in a day......So my answer isn't what you think. Diet soda helps in calories but doesn't seem to help with diets. So....I think its a person choice but the best choice no matter what you are eating is to have water or tea!!

Well you can cut like 150 calories by getting the diet drink, as they are mostly sugar. You'd also cut down the calories by having a single burger without things like mayonaise, relish and ketchup, getting lettuce tomato and pickle instead, and getting the small fries instead of the "biggie" or "super" size. These might make the difference between having a meal there and skipping it. It's is rediculous though to get a double or triple burger fully loaded with large fries and onion rings and apple pie with "diet" soft drink.

I order a diet soda with fast food because I don't like the taste of regular soda (not because I think it's going to make up for eating fatty food).

I always order regular straight tea. With it, I'll order a Whopper Jr, no mayo, and maybe some small fries. Re the diet soda, very occasionally I'll order some, because it's what I like. I see nothing wrong with having fast food in moderation, maybe once a week. Let's not get extreme!

Actually I always felt that way, like I didn't understand why people always would order this big meal at fast food restuarants and then top it off with a Diet Coke, until I met my boyfriend. He was one of those people that drived me crazy when they ordered a big calorie meal and then topped it off with a Diet Coke. So I asked him one day, what's up with that. Does that make you feel better with a Diet Coke. And his answer was that it was about making him feel better, it's just that he liked the taste better. So now I realize it's not that it maybe makes people feel better, but the fact that they may prefer the taste of a diet drink compared to the other drinks.
