2x² - 5x - 3 = 0

The middle term is - 5x

Find the sum of the middle term

Multiply the first term 2 times the last term 3 equals 6 and factor

factors of 6

1 x 6. . .←. .use these factors
2 x 3

+ 1 and - 6 satisfy the sum of the middle term

insert + 1x and - 6x into the equation

2x² - 5x - 3 = 0

2x² + 1x - 6x - 3 = 0

Group factor

(2x² + 1x) - (6x - 3) = 0

When a negative symbol (-) precedes a parenthesis and the parenthesis are remoed the signs changes from negative ( - ) to positive( + )

x(2x + 1) - 3(2x + 1) = 0

(x - 3)(2x + 1) = 0

(2x + 1)(x -3) Checking by multiplying and showing all terms is: 2x^2 + x - 6x -3. Simplifying by adding like terms: 2x^2 - 5x - 3. There's your answer.

2x^2 - 5x - 3
= (2x+1)(x-3)
--------
Ideas: 2(-3) = 1(-6) and 1-6 = -5, the coefficient of the linear term.Therefore 2x(-3) + x(1) = -5x.
