Is there a stylebook or an authoritative source which can provide direction on this?

Nothing official, but you can put something like:

BA, Elmville College (current name: Elmville University).

Your degree will always be what it was when you graduated, but to make sure that others are familiar with it (you don't want them looking up your school and coming to the conclusion that you lied because no such school currently exists), you can add the brief explanation.

I think they would use the original name with the date. Do you really want to work for an employer that can't figure out what college you came from.

Graduate of ABC College (now called DEF College).

You first list the true name of the college on your certificate, that is, in fact where you graduated. Then list the current name in paren.

the first 3 letters of the first name then the rest the new name.
