practice....get a puzzle and do that....also as addictinggames.com there is a game you can play where you have to place all the states in the correct place on a blank map. when I was in high school I not only had to learn where all the starts were, but i had to know their capitals, then once we were done with the US we had to learn every country and capital in the world and be able to place them all on a blank map. The best thing you can to do memorize it all is to practice, practice, practice. Good luck to you

Get some practice blank ones and start filling out the states you already know...look at a real map to see which states join next to the ones you know. Recopy on another blank and see how many more you can fill in by memory...by going back and forth between a real map and your practice ones, you should get a mental picture of the right names for the shapes. It's visual memory mostly...square states, skinny states, big giant states, etc. Pretty soon you'll be able to identify a state by its shape...or by its neighbors...so that when you think "Louisiana" its shape will come to mind, and when you see its boot-shape, you'll think "Louisiana".
