My daughter has just upgraded her Desktop Windows XP with 1gb ram, had a router connected but uses a new laptop with Vista o/s in a different part of the house thats fine, but she cant connect to MSN on the desktop. The Computer Technician that installed it for her seems to think its her AVG free & Comodo Firewall is the problem. He`s taken the Tower away saying he will put on a Security prog , but she will have to pay for it. Is this the possible answer do you think. Thankyou

this is a problem that i could sort out for you in 5 minutes
firstly the two programs you are using are not the best you could of chosen and secondly windows vista dosent really need a 3rd party firewall, with its much improved security and improved firewall ,you can use the windows default firewall that comes with vista, its easier to configure and is much less intrusive
as for a.v.g,although its a good program it tends to cause a few problems with certain applications and can throw up a few f.p,s(false positives),these are virus alerts that are not viruses but sometimes p.u.p.s(potentially unwanted programs),programs that grisoft think contain unwanted data and code
a good alternative to a.v.g is avast 4.7 anti-virus(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html),this is a free anti-virus and is a reliable program with regular updates and a easy to use interface,it also has changable skins and all updates are notified on the desktop by a talking notification
if you still wish to use a 3rd party firewall then zone alarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=56pus&ctry=GB&lang=en)free is a very good alternative, and causes less problems than comodo
personally i think the so-called technician is telling you fibs as to make more money out of you,my advice is carry on with the tecnician, make sure he gets your daughter on msn but when the jobs done let me know what was actually wrong with it and i will let you know the true cost of such problem
any problems let me know
good luck mate!

So Vista bashing again are we! There is nothing wrong with Vista as it's a lot better than XP in my opinion and i've used that for years! But now onto that little problem the problem is not the with the tower and he shouldn't have taken it away in the first place the fact that it probably wasn't configured properly was the problem i just installed Comodo today cos i can't get Zone Alarm as i've got the 64bit version of Vista and they don't do one yet and i am using AVG Free with no problems!! If possible try to get your money back from him as he was just looking to make some easy money out of you The cheeky get that he is!!

Everyone here has got the wrong end of the stick.

It's the laptop with VISTA that's causing the problems not the tower. This is a well known fact.
The way out of this little dilemma is to go XP on both computers (as the tower probably will not take Vista). Do that and your daughters problems are over.

Vista is no where near the quality it should be. As always with Microsoft Os's you should wait a couple of years, as all the teething problems then will have been solved.

he did not have to remove the computer to do this, your router and computer has all the security you need dont know why pepole use software firewalls as well as other firewalls that are built in your computer and modem router setup. all you need then is anti virus and spyware protection all software firewalls slow your computer down and make you paranoid but no dout other pepole have there own thoughts on firewalls love to know the Security prog he puts in that will cost you

money grabber i think you should be able to connect to msn,
as new memory has no difference to what you connect to....
did it connect before!!!!!? if so there should be no problem,
more like the person who put this in is just taking money off you for nothing....
all firewalls can be configured to let this program use the port needed to connect.....
you just need to go to options to do this......

it could be comodo, its a good firewall, but you really have to know it. za is easyer. its not avg. avg doesn't block anything, it only watches things.
