when i asked her why, she said it helps keep it from going flat so fast. I told her that shaking it would make it go flat faster. who is right?

You're right. The carbonation that make the soda fizzy (not flat) gets released when you shake the bottle. But on the other hand, if there was only a little bit of soda left in the bottle, and it already seemed flat, then shaking it right before you drink it might make it seem temporarily fizzier. So your mom isn't totally wrong.

Shaking soda makes its particules move faster. (So does the gas in it.) So the pressure rises. Solubility of gasses increase with pressure. So, it sounds weird but your mom is right. The solved gas doesn't want to go out. But I still can't believe it I'll go and try!!

I dont know demand she explains the physics that are involved in her method I think you are right

gases cannot re dissolve by shaking but they redissolve after they sit in the fridge, like I said ask her the physics

Of course you are. Seems like she was just messing with ya. By shaking it you are getting rid of all the carbonation by causing all of the gas to be released.

Shaking it causes bubbles, bubbles are the CO2 in it. That's what makes it carbonated, she's releasing everything magical in it. YOU are right.
