He took a cyanide capsule in his bunker and then shot himself. His last order was to send his adjutant out to get gasoline so that he and Eva Braugn could be burned as not to be identified. Apparently the Russians confirmed this through eyewitness accounts and dental records. When the Russians arrived Hitler's Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels and his family were burning as well.

The official story that is commonly believed and accepted by most people is that Adolph Hitler and his wife Eva Braun committed suicide together on the afternoon of April 30, 1945. Causes of death: Hitler died of a fatal gunshot wound by placing his pistol in his mouth and pulling the trigger. Braun ingested a poison (a cyanide capsule).
However some theories suggest otherwise:
Some reports cite that Hitler did not shoot himself, but also ingested poison along with Eva. Still others claim he did both.
Some theories hint at a cover up of Hitler's death. amongst those theories: a possible "faked" death by having one of his "lookalikes" killed...and presenting his body to the public, thus allowing Hitler to escape undetected to Spain, then Argentina. He supposedly escaped with the help of the Allies.
At any rate, J Edgar Hoover kept FBI records on any sort of reports people of seeing Hitler alive there or anywhere else in the Americas. According to those who believe this particular "escape" theory, Hitler died in 1960. Supposedly there's DNA evidence and dental records to prove this...but others blow that off as yet another conspiracy theory. There is a book that explores this particular theory:

However the Russians refuted this...they claimed to have his skull in Moscow...that shows the gunshot wound to the head

Some believe that Hitler, rather than dying by his own hand, was assasinated and made to look like a suicide. This is not entirely unfeasible as there were at least 17 attempts to assassinate him during the time HItler was in power including a major attempt on July 20, 1944. These assassination attempts were planned by Nazi Germans who wanted to seize power for themselves, or Russian, British, French and American members of the Resistance.
So I guess it's a matter of what you choose to believe...

He shot himself in the mouth while, at the same time, bit down on a vial of cyanide.
MUCH too easy a way for him to go.
