Its mostly as you say but not all just that. The conflict develops when theory and modeling is over developed which is most of the time. But, there is some observation which is good-there should be more looking and less pontificating in science. They elevate the wrong details. As for how old the Earth is-there is no way to know at this time but maybe some day a way will be discovered but not by current methods which are more like reading tea leaves.

Bubbles1066,
Science is not speculation, it is a method for deducing natural laws and truths from experimentation and observation. The earth is between 4.5 and 4.6 billion years old, and there is an extremely large amount of evidence, including radiometric dating techniques, isotopic measurements, and other observations and calculations that indicate this to be the case. We know this with nearly as much certainty as we know the earth is round. Nothing in science is ever PROVEN, but this age of the earth is as close to a proven fact that science is ever likely to achieve.
If you are curious as to the reasons and methods of how we know this, that is too much information to get into in a "Yahoo Answers" response. I would suggest that you find a good book on historical geology, there are plenty out there that will have lots of good information.

The Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. This is the conclusion of several different radiometric dating methods, all of which point to the same age. If you'd like more information you can check out zirconium dating on google. It's quite fascinating.
It is easy to project one's own ignorance on the subject onto scientists actively working in the field, but it's the height of arrogance to assume that scientists don't know something that you don't know. They're not stupid. If you, knowing next to nothing about geology, have come up with what you think is a hole in the current scientific paradigm, chances are many millions to one against you being right, or even original.

Interpretation of radiometric age dating of zircons suggests that the Earth is at least 4.404 billion years old.
Modern geologists consider the age of the Earth to be around 4.54 billion years (4.54×109 years).[1] This age represents a compromise between the interpretations of oldest-known terrestrial minerals – small crystals of zircon from the Jack Hills of Western Australia – and astronomers' and planetologists' determinations of the age of the solar system based in part on radiometric age dating of meteorite material and lunar samples.
We must begin to look for other planets to live on in the event a major catastrophic event such as a meteroid hits Earth. The Tunguska event, sometimes called the Tunguska explosion, was a massive meteorite explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya (Under Rock) Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai of Russia, between 7:00 and 8:00 AM on June 30, 1908.
The energy of the blast was estimated to be between 10 and 20 megatons[5] of TNT — 1,000 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The explosion felled an estimated 80 million trees over 2,150 square kilometers (830 sq mi). It is estimated to have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale.

NO freaking way. My boyfriend now his ex-spouse is like 30 years older than me and 21 years older than him. i think of she exchange into merely out to have somebody to play with and administration. Older women are greater mature so why could they prefer to play with a extreme college infant? it particularly is like going to a playschool to get a date. style of ill. Pedophiles are actually not continuously going for persons under 18. Sorry 10 years may be the cap.

Roughly 6000 years old, according to geneologies of the Bible, is when God created everything---time, space, matter, energy, light and natural laws as a one time, special event---any theory of billions of years is just that---a theory. No method of dating can produce an accurate date because of inherent flaws and assumptions not in evidence. It's a belief system just like religion.

If asked how old you are, you'd answer in years,
(Thats two significant figures), not in days.
4.5 Billion years is also two significant figures.
What's the problem?
