I need computers for my 3 kids. They will be used for school work as well as online gaming and IMing. Where would you recommend to get a good deal and what kind of systems should I look for?

I'd recommend that you look at the Dell's and watch the sales there. Go to http://www.dell.com and "sign up" (create an accoount) and you will get notified of the sales. Many of them are for 1 day only so it helps to get the email notifications.

We have 7 Dells in the family. I recently purchased one of the XPS series and my brother just bought one of the Inspiron laptops.

Thus far, not one problem with any of the computers.

As far as what to look for, here's what I'd recommend if you want your kids to have decent gaming capabilities beyond doing all the school work.

2.1 GHz dual core or core2duo processor
160 GB Hard Drive
2 GB RAM
CD/DVD +/- writer/burner or CD/DVD dual layer
256 MB video RAM
Built in Sound/audio is fine. Soundblaster is great
Built in Wi-Fi
15.4" Monitor or 17" if multi tasking is going to be the norm. (I'm assuming you mean "laptops" for the kids. If you're looking for desk tops, go with a 19" flat panel monitor.)
Windows XP if possible or Vista if you absolutely have to.
Opt out of all the "free trial" software if you can.

You can most likely get all of the above at Dell (minus the 17" monitor) for $550 to $700 depending on which sales you happen to catch.

I happen to think that Dell is the best option for the money you spend. There's simply no need to spend lots of bucks ($1000 to $2000) for a computer unless you are really into high performance for what ever reason.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm...if you have time for them to be shipped, get them from Dell.com. You can customize the computers and have them shipped to your house.. You can also look around stores like Best Buy and circuit city. Unless the kids are all different, you would want to buy 3 of the same laptop. I cant give you any suggestions because i dont know your budget, but it could be anywhere from $1000-$4000 for all 3.
