Headshots are one of the most basic tools an actor uses. You are not going to be taken seriously without them. If you can't afford headshots, then it tells everyone out there that you can't afford to be an actor in that you can't afford good classes, reproductions, etc., and that you are not serious enough about wanting to be in the business to invest in it. Acting is a craft, but there is most definitely a side that is business and you need to invest in that business (just like you would any other) with the tools needed to succeed.

Here's the rule on headshots: if you have one, take one. In community theatre, they are generally not REQUIRED, but having one is much better.
If you are auditioning for a role in a haunted house or other amusement park attraction, they definitely prefer for you to have a headshot, but they will probably take your picture even if you have a your own headshot.

Bottom line: if you can't afford headshots, have a friend take a decent black and white picture of you. You can print it on photo paper with your home PC. The better prepared you are, the more it shows that you respect the audition process. It also sets you apart from those who look like they just came in off the street last-minute.

Do all you can to stack the odds in your favor. Be prepared.

for most every audition you will need a head shot so that the producers will remember you for when they pick the cast. Make sure it looks like YOU.
