In the wild, they eat primarily small rodents and birds. They also eat other reptiles and amphibians on occasion.
Mice are by far the most practical food for captives.

I used to volunteer (by which I mean hang around pointlessly) at a Reptile park that was just down the road from where I lived.
They had quite a variety of Snakes (being Australia and all).
Some snakes were for handling, and others were not. The ones intended for handling were fed thawed out frozen mice/rats etc.
If you are concerned about feeding a live mouse to a snake, you shouldn't be anyway. Feeding live rodents to your pet makes them more agressive, and likely to strike people.
We would gas the rodents (I used to breed the pinkies for them, sad, but essential) and freeze them. We would gas twice a week.
We would immediately gut the rodents, because they just got kind of icky after being frozen for a while. When we thawed them out (within 3 or 4 days of gassing) we would put essential oils and vitamins, occasionally ground meat, inside the empty mouse-cavity, for all the health benefits a captive snake needs.
Then we would feed them.
The snakes not intended for handling were initialy fed live mice, but they opted for the vitamin enriched mice, because it was healthier (and a lot easier on the handlers).
So, get frozen mice, or ground meat with Vitamins and essential oils (contact a snake specialist to determin what these are).
Nowadays, I'm a rat keeper, lol. I fell in love witht he breeder rats (breeders, not the feeders, that got very depressing very quickly)

mice, baby rats (possibly weaner depending ont eh size of the snake and the rats.) and day old chicks, are the only things i would feed a corn snake, infact they are the only things i feed my corn snake, even then, the chicks are not a suitale diet on their own as they have too much fat in teh yolk. you would have to alternate feed, one feed chick, one feed mouse to feed them. mice are definatly the best way to go
