yes it is really popular in japan especially during mealtimes.
but the younger crowd don't really have their meals there because they termed it "yappari ojicchan obaachan"(only for the uncles and aunties) place... (-_-|||)
the next so called coolest place to dine in is denny's restaurant. it obviously has a younger crowd to it...

Very interesting question!
I would say majority of the Japanese are suspicious about the safety of U.S. beef. So, they stay away from Yoshinoya.

At the same time, there are a large number of Yoshinoya fans in Japan who are supporting Yoshinoya U.S. beef business in Japan.

Is Yoshinoya popular? Well, the answer would be Yes and No. Its up to your definition of "popularity." If you mean "majority," the answer is No.

Yoshinoya currently has 216 overseas gyudon outlets, including 49 in mainland China, 18 in Hong Kong, 50 in Taiwan and 82 in the United States.

...mind you. The artice is old, but it still answers your question. Im sure they are extended further now.

It's extremely popular in Japan. When import of US beef was banned in Japan last year, Yoshinoya suspended offering beef bowl, instead offered pork bowl.

Many beef bowl fans lamented at that time.

Yes, it's popular. It's one of the best deals in Japan. The tea is on the house. It's even better than ramen or nikuman when one has had too much to drink. There's something about that beef that sucks up all the nasty stuff in whiskey and beer inside your tummy.

i dun think it's really that popular in JAP. cos while i was travelling there.......i seldom c it out there. Ramen's shop + Macdonald r e'where.....but not Yoshinoya. in HK, they had quite some branches but not popular also. maybe there menu 2 simple..... not really seducing. but i m sure it's quite popular in the US cos i saw it e'where in those big cities such as LA, SFO.
