for a science project i need to test the lung capacity of a athlete vs. non athlete but need a machine or something to test it. mabeye like a baloon??

A balloon would work if you could accurately measure its volume. A simple way would be to put the uninflated balloon in a large pitcher completely full of water, then measure the volume of the water that overflows when the balloon is inflated.

Take a gallon container like a milk jug and fill it with water. Invert that jug into a bucket full of water. Put a hose into the opening of the gallon jug. After your subjects blow into the jug you'll be left with a volume of water in the gallon jug that is less than when you began. Remove the hose. Close the opening to the gallon jug and remove from the larger bucket. Measure your volume of water and compare to the volume when you began. Some simple math and you have your answer.

Edit: The balloon idea is an ok one, but tough to get an accurate reading with. It's cumbersome to hold a balloon in water.
