The venous blood is hotter and needs to cool and thus the veins are closer to the surface. But carotid artery can be felt relatively closer to the skin in the neck region.

I tend to agree arteries are deeper in the body while veins often appear on the surface. I was in nursing and learned nothing about why this should be. However, arteries have a thick wall to them, the tunica. This makes it difficult for an artery to collapse. Veins on the other hand have thin walls and can be easily collapsed. I'm guessing that the position of the veins and arteries is something to do with protecting them. Perhaps the smaller veins would collapse under layers of skin and tissue so need to be near the surface. Also the blood in arteries is under a lot more pressure than the venous blood. If you cut an artery it will squirt. So perhaps the reason for arteries not being on the surface is to protect them from damage which would be more serious than cutting a vein.

Arteries are deeper and veins are more superficial. Don't ask me why, this is just the way it is.

-------LEEEEEET ME TELL YOU---------------------------------
dont listen to anyone else (no offense guys), but seriously, dont listen to them! really, everyone here is a know-it-all. anyway, Hi, Im Jubayer, hi, nice to meet you.
you can see arteries........look at the in-side of your wrist (no, im not referring to the dark colored scribbles, they're the venules), now, turn your wrist 90 degrees anti-clockwise ( so that the thumb is facing up). a little to the right of your wrist, and then down a bit, you should see a thick bulging (skin colored) vessel that is spongy. THAT IS AN ARTERY. cant remember the name cos there are too damn many of them!
another reason why we cant see the arteries is cos the vessels themselves are thick with muscle, and frankly, no human eye could see through that amount of muscle!
PS. always read my answers with a pinch of salt; sometimes i like to bend the truth.....

Arteries are on the inside, and the skin is not transparent. Sorry.
