I'm 16 and I've wanted to improve in dancing for a while now, but there are two facts in the way. One, I didn't grow up as a dancer. Two, I'm not in the best shape. My passion is musical theatre, and I know that dancing is a huge part of it. I'm not looking to become a professional dancer, I just want to improve in something I'm not good at. The last time I tried to take dance somewhere, I was the joke of the class and nobody took me seriously, not even the teacher. My friends have told me that I should still try, and I look to them for advice on dancing because they're dancers, but I'm still hesitant to try. So, should I try dancing again despite the bad experience I had before? And what kind of dancing should I take?

No, of course it is not too late to dance! You just need to look around and find the right studio for you. Look for one that is not focused on training girls to be professsionals. Instead, seek a studio where the class is for beginners, but you're still with girls your age, and where the teacher(s) aren't looking for perfection. The important thing you need to do is learn a few things for musical theater and have fun. Some bigger studios even offer Broadway dance classes. As to what classes you should take, first I would say take what you want to. But if you want someone else's opinion as well, I would say tap and jazz. Those are the two types of dances that are most often linked to musical theatre. You don't need to take ballet; only do it if you want to. Hip hop is a fun class too, but once again, that style of dance isn't in plays as much. So good luck finding the right studio, and I hope you enjoy dance. Remember, have fun! :]

Dancing is for you, who cares what others think. You enjoy it go after it, it makes you feel good and will keep you fit, because you are having fun doing it you don't realize that you are giving your body a workout.
You don't say what type of dancing you want to do, jazz, ballet, ball dancing, line dancing. However you can learn a bit of all those, remember to strech your muscles first. or start with a slow rhythm song so you slowly warm up. I enjoy dancing and do it by myself with the stereo turned up high this is my workout because I hate to exercise.
If you don't aspire to becoming one of the greatest dancers just do it for fun, ask your friends to show you the box step it can be used in almost any dance, add your own moves dancing is interpreting the music you hear with your body I love it and I don't care how I look when I dance I do it for me. LOL

~try Jazz (type in Jazz Dance on Youtube)or modern/contemorary (think, slightly less stiff, no pointe ballet)
~c if the studio offers teen classes so u'd be with ppl ur own age.
~Start doing stretches now to that u can get into better shape wen u start.
Look at Sabra on u think u can dance, she started when she was 16 and won the competition! i no ur not trying to be a professional but dance is still fun exercise and for all ages.
Act serious and really try ur best

Try contemporary dance. Its great fun (if you get the right teacher), you don't have to be a skinny minnie, and it's a wonderful workout. A lot of contemporary dancers start later, as it allows for you to be an individual, and there are many different techniques to try, so you can just keep trying different classes till you find the one that you really 'click' with! Good luck to you!

Even though I grew up with dancing...its never to late to join. If your passion is musical theater and your not a good dancer...you won't make it on browdway...or any other musical theater carrer. I suggest taking ballet (it is the baisics of all dance) and jazz and tap. good luck, don't give up, and prove everyone wrong who ever made fun of you.
