I'm getting errors that the DVD is a read only file and that I can't copy the files to my computer. Are all DVDs like this? How do people upload them then?

hehe looks like you are trying to complicate matters.
A read only file means you cannot edit it, it shouldnt stop you from copying it. However, if you wish to make a complete backup (or upload it to your online backup) you would want to crate an ISO.

An ISO is a disk image file, so it copies the complete disk (even hidden files and such) to a single file, which can be burned again.

to do this, get magicISO. easily found by typing it into google.
You can also then use an iso as a virtual cd/dvd so you don't have to use the real ones any more. you do that by using daemon tools.

need any more help, PM me and ill be glad to help

A Read Only file on a DVD can certainly be copied to a hard drive. It just can't be written over. If you're trying to copy a commercial dvd, it's probably the copy protection you're coming up against. You need special ripping apps to rip copyrighted dvd's, but as far as your question, there is no reason why you can't copy a file marked as read only from a dvd to a hard drive.

More depends on the Type of DVD you are talking about and the software used to copy with.
Generally there are 3 different formats of DVD.
Audio
Video-TS
Data.
Depending on your choice before you burn it will determine if you can read it or not.
Most users think that DVD is DVD.
This is I'm sorry to say is not the case.
The use of most software that comes with your computer is normally entry level and many don't offer options that I pointed out above. Roxio's Toast is considered by many to be the top of the line in burning software, and does offer several different options for burning.
