For those of you who don't know what that is, it is when you gain consciousness during the REM stage of sleep. You are aware of your surroundings but you can't move or yell for help. Most people also report hallucinations. Last night I was paralyzed face down and almost suffocated.

Based on the wikipedia definition, I have night terrors. I always thought it was just plain stress but I guess not. I sit up in my bed just as I am about to slip into sleep and usually start gasping for air.

As a young child of about 8 years old, I awakened and could not get up because I was "paralyzed." Then my mother called our family physician who made a house call. He said that I would be alright. There was no reason for this paralysis. Indeed, it lasted the one day. The next day and years afterwards, I have not experienced this episode again. Peace and God Bless.

I have that too. I also felt many times that I couldn't move. I'd try to will myself awake. I'd try screaming, but couldn't.
I'm sometimes on my back, but even then I couldn't breath. And I've had the hallucinations too. I'd see little people near me. Once I "saw" a hand come out of the wall towards me. It didn't scare me though. Even seeing the "people" staring at me didn't scare me.
My friend Laura says when this happens is when I'm being "abducted" She seems to believe that, and even said she is jealous because she'd like to experience that.
I don't know what it is, but its very, very scary when you are lying there and can't breath, can't move.

Sleeping Paralysis can be extremely terrifying. It is very common with me and my brother. I have been having since I was 8 years old. You may feel someone is pressing down on your chest, you can't breathe, you will see dark figures and hear terrifying sounds which will make you even more scared causing you to panic, try to move as much as possible, trying to scream but your mouth wouldnt open is also very common.

How did we get through it?
As for my brother,
It started when we moved into a new house outside the city. since we moved he was ill for about a week just sleeping.
He always felt someone sitting on him, therefore he is unable to breathe. It terrified him, he used to get scared because he says at times he actually opened his eyes and saw someone sitting on him. It went on for a few months until one day he told me he's had enough. he purposely slept on his back (which can trigger sleeping paralysis). He had sleeping paralysis as he'd expected, he managed to open his eyes and hit the dark figure. My brother described that the dark figure fell to the ground vanished and never appeared.
My research conluded that he fought his fear, a negative entity in his mind. Could be fear, stress, depression...etc.

My way of getting through it.

suddenly i felt it. my hands stuck to the bed, my eyes closed. And strange sounds i heard (someone screaming, or just talking with a strange tone).
First thing i thought was:
"Okay im here just calm down, no one can harm me, everything is just hallucination."
When i felt i couldnt breathe, i would still try to relax because eventually you will fall asleep in 10 seconds. Panicking makes things much worse.

These days since i got a job where i work night shifts i stopped having sleeping paralysis. I really want to have one as ive heard that whne you have sleeping paralysis, your halfway to astral projections.

Yes, but no hallucinations

One thing though is whenever I get it, I will always resist it, eventhough I intended to sleep at that moment, I don't know why but I will just resist it and keep trying to move a muscle. It's like I'm trying to wake myself up but cant move

I have but did not know what it was called. The worst part is when yelling comes out like a soft moan...when all you want is to wake up from your own screaming.

no,that must be horrible. i do have what is referred to as "night terrors" - it was worse when i was a kid,but still plagues me. if you are familiar with the nightmare on elm street films, that is the sleep disorder they thought the kids were suffering from -
