Great question.

Well here are some likely guesses based on the economic and other trends that we have seen in the last 100 years.

There will probably have been at least one major war between states, this could be between any combination of the above (US, China, EU or some section thereof, Russia former USSR, India, Pakistan, Brazil, Argentina, Japan).

It's likely this war will involve at least the limited use of nuclear or other WMD. This is based on the history of the last 200 years where fast growing cultures tend to exersize their dominion, France, England, Germany, Japan and the US have all engaged in unilateral wars of "conquest" which lasted some period of time.

China or India could be good candidates for at least 1/2 (or both sides) of such a war.

Resources will become more scarce, this is not a projection that is fanciful, but based on the hard reality that the economy has several "Achilles' heels", where access to high-quality, easily obtained resources underwrite a portion of our economic well-being. water, oil, foodstuffs, electricity all are essentials which could become more irregular and endangered .

Oil and water certainly , oil simply because we have more or less used all the "easy" oil and will have to work much harder in the future to find/bring it to market.

Water, we take it for granted in many parts of the US, the eastern 1/2 of the country normally is not very concerned, the western 1/2 of the country - knows better. It's that way across the entire rest of the world, clean fresh water has become a source of concern and this is complicated by the fact that many engineering firms have locked up the water rights to vast areas of many countries with sometimes ridiculous laws crafted to back them up. In some parts of South America it is technically illegal to capture rainwater for example.

Economically, we run a very thin thread, The US has tremendous amounts of debt, relative to it's overall population and economic output. If US citizens don't wake up soon, it will be too late to address the growing debt problem and the US economy could collapse. The result of such a collapse would be an economic depression that would make the "Great" depression look like a picnic.

Pretty much if any politician in the next 50 years says "tax cuts" you can know that they are three things.

1. Lying to you to get your vote.
2. Unaware or unwilling to address the problem of debt.
3. They are not someone you want to elect to a public office.

I'm not saying I want tax-happy politicians, I want politicians who structure the state and federal budgets to be responsible towards the public debt.

Big City living, In 50 years one of two things will be the case, we will either have fusion power , or we won't. If we don't we're in serious trouble economically, militarily, etc, and by we I mean all of human civilization.

If we have fusion power, it will be tremendously expensive, but in big cities (initially) power will be available and relatively cheap.

I wish I could say it would be like some episode of "Star Trek" with cool technology and all, but I suspect that given human nature, it's likely to look alot more like some of the more functional looking out-takes from movies like "Blade Runner" , "Mad Max" or "Children of Men".

There is a 1 to 500 chance of earth colliding with a space rock (Asteroid 2011 AG5) estimated to be about 140 meters wide on February 5 2040. Scientist are keeping a close watch but really, the chance of collision is pretty small. Aside from that, no real danger from celestial debris, not in the next 50 years. There are other danger like a gamma ray from and exploding star. Anyway earth is always under threat and such destruction has not happened, allowing evolution to continue into life as we know it. Hopefully it will not happen in our lifetime or better not at all. The safest place in the universe (for us) is earth. A better deal is to protect it, not evacuating it.

If we carry on with mans pollution and disregard for extinguishing animal and plant life on the planet I think we will be living in a world with extreme weather, rising ocean levels and depletion of our natural resources. However if we decide to make some real changes and decrease pollution levels take care of our animals that are nearing extinction and give serious thought to preservation of our rainforest's who knows we may actually continue to live happily on this amazing planet.

Hi. Having experienced the last fifty amazing years I would hesitate to predict, but you can be sure of a few things. We will still be scratching the surface of genetic engineering, barring a "Mozart" type genetic genius. We will still be at war someplace on the planet (sigh). Machine to human and back interfaces will be startling.

I think it will be similar to what it is now. There may be a few different country names on the world map, but I don't think we will experience "the end of life as we know it". Nor do I think we will be much closer to either "The Jetsons" or even "Star Trek" as far as technological knowledge goes.

it'll be fine. throughout history, people have been predicting that the world would descend into chaos over the next 100 years, and it's never happened.

It will be fifty years older. Things will probably be the same...although, I hope US soldiers won't still be in Iraq by then.
