I am producing a historic piece of writing for my media studies project. What notices should I put on it to stop unauthorized duplication? By that, I mean the copyright notices you see on published books etc. Thanks!

You need for your project to be in FIXED FORM. A doc file or html is not sufficient. get a paper printout or at least burn a non-editable CDrom. Once fixed, that version is automatically copyrighted. Needless to mention we are talking your original content, not pictures or quotes stolen from elsewhere can be claimed. You don't get a copyright on the US Constitution just for including a copy of it.
