First things first.
You cannot have two Firewalls running at the same time. (If you do, your computer won't work properly so you will have to disable the windows xp FW).

Zone Alarm is a bi directional firewall (it checks incoming as well as outgoing connections) whereas windows xp checks only the incoming connections. Trust me (I Have worked in Zone Alarm Tech support) Zone Alarm is better than xp fw.

As far as I know, if Microsoft hasn't changed it in the last few years, it is still very limited. Better than nothing, but if it's the same you can get a much better firewall. Turn off Microsoft's firewall if you do. They're liable to interfere with each other. Microsoft will tell you this, maybe in Help & Support.

The built-in Windows XP firewall only monitors incoming traffic so to answer your question, yes ZA is better.

yes, of course zap is better than xp firewall. if you have zap turned on you do not need another firewall. so you better turn off the xp firewall.
