Personally I prefer a rolled stencil on t-shirts, but if you want to spray, you can buy Tulip brand spray dyes, or I just get bottled Rit dye and put it in spray bottles. (There's no aerosol for that) You can find the bottles in the cosmetics section of the grocery store or drugstore. Or you can invest in a spray gun for the "graffiti" look.

To make the stencil, I would use freezer paper that is available in rolls at the supermarket. Look near the plastic sandwich bags for it.
the advantage of using freezer paper is that you can place the shiny side of the paper AGAINST the T-shirt and using an iron, you can iron the stencil in place. It will stick to the shirt, and is easily removed after you have painted.
Also. Put a sheet of cardboard inside the shirt before you paint. This will prevent the paint from seeping through to the back of the shirt. The cardboard should be wide enough so there are no wrinkles in the fabric, but don't stretch the fabric too tight as this will distort the image you are trying to produce.
I would also look for fabric stencil paints and stenciling brushes. The brushes are round and cut flat across the bristles. They are used in a circular motion when stenciling with very little paint on them. The technique is called "dry brushing". You should be able to find these things in an art supply store.
Good Luck.

Use airbrush paints ~ an airbrush will give you much better control than a spray can or a squirt bottle. For a stencil, cut it from clear contact paper. Peel of the paper backing, stick it to the shirt, apply your paint medium and allow it to dry. Pull off the contact paper. (Be sure you line the shirt with cardboard before you apply paint.)

Spray on paint isn't that great sometimes.
You will want to put a peice of cardboard under the shirt. Tape the stencils together then quickly spray, or else it will leak. becareful and ask the attendent at the store which spray paint would be the best.

Best to use the fabric paint/ spray paint that won't wash out, or fade when you wash the T.shirt...i don't think there's a specific type of spray paint, as long as it's for fabrics these sprays work better on cotton.

Fabric paints your looking 4. Im not sure you'll find it in a spray paint can, but you can pour it in a empty (cleaned) spray paint can.

If you have a Michaels craft store in your area someone there should be able to tell you exactly what you'll need and probably how to use it.
