personally, we slept in one for years, till central air came into action, and then added a ceiling fan in our bedroom, after 3 nights, we agreed to just have a four poster bed and take the canopy down, so we could feel the cool air upon us

Yes, I have slept in a king sized canopy bed and a few years ago took down the canopy and now it is a four posted bed and I once had a canopy (awning) on a 40 ft Provost, but never slept under it. I have also slept on bales of hay in the barn waiting for our mares to foal and slept on the floor of the whelping room waiting for puppies to be born. You just make do with what gets flung your direction.

Never slept on a canopy bed.
We bought a water bed back in 84. After 2 water bed mattresses, we decided to go with the traditional mattress. We bought a queen size mattress and put it in the water bed frame. The frame is on a pedestal with 6 drawers on either side. Works great. My wife wants a 'traditional' frame now. But then we'd have to buy at least one more dresser (we have one now that is 27 years old and starting to show its age).

That is another great bit of information. I never thought about it like that. I would have hated to have to clean the top of that canopy.

You have such a delightful way of sending us information.

Edit: The answer is I have not slept in a canopy bed.

No, because I saw a movie when I was a kid and the canopy came down & smothered the person lying in the bed.
I know it's only a movie, but...it's just one of those bugaboos like the closet monster.

We have had one on holiday but I do not know what all the fuss is about, 6 ft wide bed would be more fun

Originally it was to keep bugs away from the sleeping . Then I think it became something just for show.
