I'm curious about the origins of mystic gems like quartz & topaz. Are these stones found in the ground that way, or are they treated?

The term "Mystic" when used with cut gemstones is an invented name used to describe stones that have a rainbow like play of colour on their surface. This colour is NOT natural but is applied to the gem by the manufacturer in exactly the same way they put a coating on the lens of your camera (that usually looks bluish) or on your spectacles to reduce reflection. This coating is microscopically thin and is made up of the oxides of various metals. It is also very soft and as a result "Mystic gems" are a total waste of money as, with normal use, the coating becomes scratched and starts to come off and look ugly in a very short time and you are left with the basic quartz etc.

Most are found naturally that way, but there is nothing mystical about them.

They are naturally occuring but are cut into different shapes like diamond. American diamonds (zircon) are synthetic.
