it's unofficial because that's usually when school starts. there used to be unwritten rules on how to dress (put away the white shoes and wear black) that not many follow any more. the official end to summer follows astronomical (as in astronomy, not really big) rules.

because the officially end is when fall starts September 22/23 depending, it varies from year to year.

why would you want summer to end earlier...? But really i dont think fall should start any earlier cuz then that would make winter closer and in Cleveland that means waddling through 6 inches of snow.
