Try the bare minimum set up. NO FDD, HDD, CD drive and just 1 stick RAM. It should POST and be able to open BIOS menu. If it does that, then the problem could be with the hard drive or the OS in it. If Win XP, try repairing it with this procedure:

If bare set up goes on auto shutdown, problem could be with motherboard or power supply.

Check your CPU fan, is it working or clogged up? Same with your power supply fan.

Both have safety circuits so in the event the fan goes south you won't fry your computer

Thats the easy fix, the first answer is the harder one.
