A demanding position, after the catcher, the shortstop is the most demanding position. SS need a strong arm and quick release. Must know how to get in the proper position according to the guy at the plate. They need a lot of range for grounders, they need to communicate the type of pitch to the 3b who cant see the signs the catcher is flashing. They are almost always the lead cutoff guy because the arm is usually stronger than 2b's. Essentially the captain of the infield. The difficult play of a grounder deep towards third, and has to not only grab it but throw to first with all body momentum going opposite way, and it has to be on target. He has to be tough and agile yet be also an offensive player to stay in the lineup. Tough gig, Ripken was great, Michael Young and of course Jeter. I like Nomar's style he had a cannon for an arm. Good luck if you are playing SS for your team and keep improving.

Hanley Ramirez is the best shortstop in baseball. He has speed and power. He just came off an amazing offensive and defensive season. He's great but still continues to work hard to become better every year. I think there's a real possibility for Hanley Ramirez becoming the greatest shortstop in baseball history.

A shortstop plays between 2nd and 3rd base. He can cover them if needed and he can get balls coming through 2nd and 3rd. Derek Jeter is a famous shortstop. ( I am NOT saying i like the Yankees!) Anyway, to get the best idea of what a shortstop is you should watch an MLB game.

He is responsible for fielding balls hit between third and second base. He also covers second base when the second baseman goes after a ball hit into his territory. Normally he is also the one responsible for taking balls thrown back by the outfielders on the left side of the field after being hit by the batter.
