If the fluid is brown, it has been burned some and should be changed. This needs to be done at a shop because just removing the pan and draining it leaves much of the fluid inside the torque converter and it needs special equipment to pump it out.

The fluid level should be checked with the trans warmed up and it should be in the range indicated on the dipstick. It can be overfilled or under filled. New fluid is red in color.

Tranny fluid is a pinkish color, if it is still pink it should be ok. You can over fill a transmission though, just read the dip stick with the car running at idle and warm. If its too full you can damage the filter that sits in side the pan on the tranny.

You can try draining a bit yourself in to a bucket or take it in if its not your type of thing to get under a car and get all greasy.

fluid should be pinkish. If it's brown, it's getting old fluid should be changed on regular intervals (owners manual or contact dealership for how often) The level depends on the temperature. I would say if it's brown, it's probably time for a change though.

Of course you can have too much! Anything above the full mark is too much. Too much is as bad as too little.

It should be red and smell fairly sweet, a bit like strawberries. If it's brown, you need to have your tranny flushed. Have the filter replaced as well.
