I've been having problems with my computer freezing up on me and I was told to try and do degragmentation but it never finishes. Actually it never progresses past 1% and I've left it running for over 2 hours and when I come back to check on the progress, it's still at 1%. Why would this be? How can I get it to finish defragging?

This happens because every time the defragmenting program detects disk activity, it restarts.

To avoid this problem start Windows in Safe Mode and then defrag the drive.

To start Windows in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.
When the screen goes black repeatedly hit the F8 key at the top of your keyboard. Don't keep it pressed, hit it repeatedly.
You'll get a plain text screen with various startup options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to highlight the "Safe Mode" option and hit Enter.
You'll be asked which Operating System you want to start. If Windows XP is already highlighted hit Enter. Otherwise use the arrow keys to highlight Windows XP and then hit Enter.
Windows will start in Safe Mode and you'll get a dialog box telling you what Safe Mode is. OK your way out.

Defrag your drive.

Hope this helps
