I'm a student and was looking for a new bank closer to where I live now. My current bank is a home-town first bank and I experience ALOT of problems with my debit card getting declined simply bc they are "updating systems" despite the fact that I HAVE PLENTY of money in the account and have had the account for 2 years and have NEVER overdrafted or even come close.

Anyway, I applied online for compass for the "build your own" free checking and got approved. I chose cash back and interest on my balance as my two free premium services. It seems like a pretty good deal to me. But when I searched on here it seems alot of people have had problems out of them? But then again, alot of the "problems" were NSF fees and, in my opinion, that is not the banks fault it is the user's fault for acting irresponsibly with their account! So, from someone who is responsible with your money, how has your experience been with Compass?

I had a bad experience with Compass bank in that they wanted a large balance on hand to give you the "free checking". So there was a catch. And when you drop below their "minimum" for one day by one cent, they charge you in full for the entire month. I'd say stay away - try Capital One if they are in your area. Their free checking is truly free as long as you keep $1.00 in the account.

I haven't had experience with Compass but I think your analysis of the problem is probably correct. I see lots and lots of complaints about the bank I use but it poor financial management that is the cause not the bank.
