I think he would need to check with the school. I think rules regarding this would differ from school system to school system. If he has been out for 2 years he may have some catch up to do. Perhaps you could schedule a meeting with an empathetic school counselor.
If he is unable to go back to school, he can get a GED through many programs in your area. I am sure the school counselor could help you with this as well. Or you could even check the phone book for places that offer GED courses.
For sports, if he is ineligible for HS sports due to age, have him check into Rec leagues. My husband played rec league basketball in our county for one year. He was 40 and most of the men in the mens rec league were 18-22.

18 is not too old to go to high school, but he may feel more comfortable in a community college where he can get his diploma, at least in California, and some steps toward either job training or college. I would call the local high school and see if he's eligible to enroll. He is after all a legal adult now and has a whole lot of options.
I don't know about sports. I hope he wants to go to school to get an education, not to play the games he gave up two years ago. He would be able to play sports in community college.

Why would a grown man want to rejoin high school? What would the parents think if he wanted to date their daughters? I recommend he get his GED and then go to college. He'll feel much less out of place there and college will get him a better job than high school!

It depends on where he lives, but many states now have programs for dropouts who now want to get a diploma. Here in Arizona, students are allowed to work on a diploma until they turn 22. The school I teach at is specifically designed for that sort of student.
Don't have him ask at his local school for options; instead contact the state dept. of education. They will have more knowledge of options.
It is unlikely he will be able to participate in sports.
If there are no local options, there is also GED programs as have been mentioned

I really don't think that a school can reject a person on their age, and I think that once a person is enrolled on a school whatever age they are they are allowed to play sports as long as they have passing grades. And if they don't accept him, you can check out a technical school, that way it is teaching him a life skill, so I am99% aure they can't reject him, and as for sports, I am sure that threre are organized team sports in the community!
Good Luck!

You Might want to call the school because I believe you can attend until the age of 19. Otherwise you wouldn't have 2nd year seniors. And if he was allowed in he would be able to participate in their sports program. Good luck.

Schools come to drop outs with open arms. His classes will be at night, but they'll be shorter than day school. At least that's what I heard.

Depends on what school he goes to. A GED is sufficient to get into almost any junior college.

No--he is considered an adult now. It is inappropriate for him to attend school with minors. He needs to attend an adult education program or get a GED.
