It's not at all relevant, merely an honour and a social cachet. To become a knight, you must be on an honours list presented to HM by the government. Knighthoods are not hereditary and receive no money.

I searched for this on Wikipedia and it gives the information you are seeking. The site that I came across is knighthood in the UK.and tells you all aspects of achieving knighthood in this country. It gives the orders, decorations and medals of knighthood and how to achieve them. Basically knighthood means chivalry whereby one is awarded the title by accomplishment, personal bravery or service to the United Kingdom. There are 3 types of awards; Honors, to recognise merit in terms of achievment and service, Decorations tend to be used to recognize specific deeds, and Medals which are given to recognize bravery, long and/or valuable service and/or good conduct.
