Usually,one of the best cold sore remedies is putting ice on the infection it in the first 24 hours after it has formed. However, once it starts to scab over, you have to make sure you don't pick at it and spread the virus.
Herpes is pretty contagious and you can easily transmit the infection to further areas of your lips, and even your gums. Don't rub your eyes or come into contact with other areas of your body when you get a cold sore.
Also, when you take a shower, make sure you don't get the cold sore wet. It may remove the scab and prolong healing.
Being a long-time cold sore sufferer, I've tried all kinds of cold sore remedies. There isn't much you can do once the cold sore surfaces. Just don't pick at it and keep your hands out of your mouth.

You can't really make a cold sore go away...just try to make sure you don't pick at it (I always have a hard time doing this myself).
