Twist the plate around the ball a 1/4 turn and it will come off. Look inside you will see a wheel and a couple of bars that the ball moves when you roll it. All of these need to be cleaned. Typically they get a build up of crud that needs to come off. Use some rubbing alcohol to soften it, then find something to pick the stuff off. I use tweezers.

Alternative, invest in an optical mouse. No cleaning necessary.

Why not buy an optical mouse - they are cheap and very efficient. My old roller ball mouse drove me crazy.

It is a rollerball? if so take off the bottom plate take off the ball and wipe it clean. ta da.
