To get a US passport takes an average of 3 months with some applicants waiting longer. This is due to the new passport requirements as added by the US Dept of Homeland Security. They came up with the plan, but no way to implement it. Therefore, dependent on where you are going, you may not need the passport itself at this time. For flights to certain areas, which previouly did not require a passport (only a birth certificate) like Mexico or the Caribbean you can now travel on a birth ceritificate, a photo ID and the reciept from the passport home (stating you have applied asnd are waiting for a passport) website at http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html. I had some client who had to do this to fly to Jamaica.
For cruises to the Caribbean passport requirements have been postponed until Summer 2008 (possibly later)

The cost is about $100 from US immigration.

There are some internet sites which state they can walk the passports through faster, but unless you get a wriiten guarantee, covering your expenses, I would not trust them at this time. We have reached a point where almost every US citizen will need a passport (just like the social security number).

It used to take about 4-6 weeks to get one, but I've heard on the news that because of the increase in demand that it's taking longer. Yes you can pay an extra fee to get it expedited. I believe that will shorten the time to 2 weeks? The amount of the extra cost is listed on the passport application form, I believe it's around $100 extra?

Unfortunately it takes a few months to get a passport since the new regulations. If you are getting ready to leave on a trip within (I believe) the next 30 days, you can make an appt. with the Passport Agency to go in and wait for it for the same day. This happened to someone I know who didn't realize their passport expired the day before they were supposed to leave on a trip. She was able to get an appt. first thing in the morning, but still had to wait until about 2:30 - 3:00 that afternoon until they did everyone's passports and then passed them out. I don't think it cost more to do, but at least she was able to get it. Good luck!

It does take quite a bit of time to process a request. Yes, you can pay an extra fee to have it expedited but it still won't be quick. You can apply for a passport (if you haven't already done so) at many post offices...check your local branch for hours that they accept applications. The web site below can help you. I believe you can print out the application from the www, get your photos taken and then take the whole thing to the post office with your ID, etc. Good luck!

Of course! If you're based in the U.S., there are several ways to expedite a passport. Don't pay the extra money through the Dept of State - it doesn't make it much faster. I was able to get one in a week and had great luck with these sites:

www.prioritypassport.com

Good Luck!

Due to new laws requiring a passport to visit ajoining countries like Mexico & Canada, there is more of a waiting list. It could take 3 months or more. Start early.

The average wait now is 3 months. You can make an appointment at one of the dozen or so processing offices across the country. But you need to make an appointment, and you need to be have made arrangements to leave soon, and even then you might not get an appointment.
