You do not do anything. It is in a tree. That is where birds, including owls, live. In the US, it would be illegal to harm it or harass it, as it is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Some owls are also endangered, giving them additional protection under the law.
Owls are hunters, so ignore the suggestion to feed it. It doesn't eat seed, it hunts and eats animals. Depending on the size of the owl, it could eat anything from large insects, mice and voles (the diet of the Northern Saw-whet owl, for example) up to geese and skunks (Great Horned Owl). If you have pets, keep them inside, or take them out only on a leash.
Also, ignore the suggestions to "make friends with it." Owls are wild animals. Leave them alone. Great Horned Owls can actually be agressive. If it is a GHO, and it clacks its beak at you, it is not happy with you being so close. Leave the area.

Why would you DO anything...it is a wild bird in nature where it is suppossed to be!! Leave it alone or just enjoy watching it, no reason to DO anything. Only a few owl species are endangered...so doubt this is one of them. You are probably seeing a Great Horned Owl or a Barn Owl..these are the two most common species. BUT, even if not endangered, ALL owl and other native birds are protected by law and harassing or harming them in any way is illegal and can get you heavily fined or even imprisoned. Just leave nature alone and enjoy it.

Why do people want to do something to every creature that makes a rare appearance? Feel lucky that you get to see it, watch it and leave it be. Only owls that are endangered(threatened) in the US are Short Eared Owls(ground dwellers), Northern Spotted Owls(Pacific Northwest), and Pigmy Owls(Sonoran Desert). Can you be sure you saw one of those?

Owls are beneficial birds and a pleasure to have around. They like to hang out in Coniferous trees-pines and cedars.
Did you know that one Great Horned Owl eats an average of 18-20 voles(type of mouse) and then passes a pellet by vomiting the pellet, which lands at the base of their favorite lookout tree? Pellets(which are very compact) contain the bones and indigestible fur/feathers.
Biology teachers in our local area give pellets to the students as a project. They have to identify the type and amount of animals/birds in the pellets by identifying and counting the bones and skulls.
It is time consuming and tedious but the students gain a lot of knowledge from the project and teachers pass the valuable information onto wildlife officials.

What do you mean "What should you do"? Why do you have to do anything.
Just don't bother it, and I bet it won't bother you.
Actually, I have an owl that lives near my house. I've learned to mimic it pretty well. Sometimes I go out at night and we hoot back and forth.
I really don't think I'm fooling it. I think it's just humoring me.

I agree with the others who said you should not harm it or harass it.
You can watch it, take picture of it, study its behavior.
