Prince Fielder has a great shot, through Sept 1, he's got .280/39 HR/ 97 RBI/ 86 Runs.
Pujols is another candidate .317/30 HR/ 84 RBI/ 84 Runs.
But I think Jake Peavy should be a candidate. Pitchers generally don't get included in the MVP race due to the Cy Young Award. Peavy stats: 2.18 ERA/ 197 K/ 15 wins.

Jimmy Rollins- hitting .296w/ 173 hits - 34doulbes- 15 triples- 24homeruns- 76rbi- 27 stolen bases-
So he'll wind up hitting around 300 with 210 hits 40 doubles 18 triples 30 homeruns 100 rbi and about 36 stolen bases.
He might not win the MVp but he should.

It is a very tight race heading into September, so still too early to call. Contenders include Matt Holiday, Chase Utley, Prince Fielder, Albert Pujols and others.
If the season ended today I think it would be Holiday, but obviously it doesn't. Should be interesting.

If chase utley didn't get hurt... he would've been a definate front runner... he still has a good chance but also in contention is holliday, pujols ( only if stl makes the playoffs) prince, howard, wright, and j-roll. to me it matters what ever team makes the playoffs

Eric Byrnes-No other player does more for his team than him. His numbers may not be as ballooned as others, but .293, 25 95 45sb is awesome for his team whose offense sucks. He is their offense.
