A combination. I would say past experiences with others (particularly during our childhood) helps to formulate fears and insecurities. As we get older, those fears and insecurities have grown so much that they become obstacles. By letting them overcome us, we also hold ourselves back in life. I think it's a combination but probably mostly due to past experiences with others (other people or circumstances in nature).

I would say fear.
Some feel they fear they might not get what they want, they fear they might not be able to achieve it.
And when it comes to other people, we fear that other people may not support or accept us if we do a certain thing that they don't like or don't approve of. So acceptance of others is another thing that hold us back. If you don't feel confidence in yourself, you will look to acceptance of others.
Also, fearing what they want is unattainable. Most usually go for the "realistic" goal, which is stupid...but many people do it because they don't want everyone to think they are a failure.

Procrastination.
Putting off what you need to do is sometimes the biggest factor in holding someone back in life.
Always jump at the opportunity when it arises as long as it what you want to do.

One of the worst things are parents who don't encourage their children and tell them they are useless. And teachers who do that too. Sometimes the biggest rebel in the class is the one who needs to be made class captain, and often they are the ones to go on and make millions.
Encouragement goes a long way.

it depends on the situation. some of us cannot move forward because we are scared of what we'll find (possibly in ourselves). and sometimes we do let other people, like our friends and family, have a very high influence in our decisions.

ussually i believe we hold ourselves beack because of fear, insecurity, and ofcourse guilt. other people can hold you back by never giving you the oppertunity to prove ourselves.

it is only yourself. No one will hold you back in life if you don't let them. It's only yourself who's holding you back.
