Kin is just an old word for family members or relatives. So, 'next of kin' is just the person you are most closely related to.

I understand it to be your closest blood relative. I am not the next of kin of my husband but my daughter is. If we had no children, it would be his brother. Hope this helps

next of kin means your closest family member still alive. normally it would be your parent or carer, but if they are not alive then a sibling or aunt and uncle could count

it means "next in line" like when someone has died and there is no will, the posessions of the dead will go to the next of kin, (next in line) this is usually a husband/wife or children.

Although NOK is nearest blood relative, I think it can also mean your legal husband or wife.
