Last night sparks shot out of the back of my computer and it died. What exactly happened? Can I retrieve my info? I know I need a new PC but what do I need to get this one going in the short term? Help, please :-(

Yes, it sounds like the power supply. Your disk drive (with your info on it) is probably OK. See a repair shop about that power supply.

Usually its just the power supply thats gone when that happens . Try buying a quality power supply bigger than the one you had that took the retirement plan. Hopefully with a new power supply it will fire up like normal. A lot of brand name computers come with little inept power supplies that can barely handle the computer in its stock state. When video cards sound cards etc are added its too much for the power supply and it fries. Dust in power supply fans clog and kill a lot of them too. Replacing a power supply is simple. 4 screws in the back. See what connectors you have on your motherboard. If the big one is 24 pin make sure you get a PSU with a 24 pin connector. If theres a 4 pin connector on the board by the cpu make sure your new PSU has a connector for it too. So simple a caveman can do it.

Sparks would indicate to me it was the power supply that died.

Open the case and look around the motherboard - does any part of it look burned / scoarched? Especially around the plugs to the power supply.

If not then you probably just need a new psu.

if the board is damaged you may still be able to take out the hard drive and just put it into a nother working PC to get your data off it - but it is possible that it was fried to if it was plugged in.

Sounds like a power supply, which is correct is about a $40. repair you can do at home.

Recommed taking it to your local independent computer store in your neighborhood and let them do a "free" diagnostic check on it. If it is the Power Supply they can install a new one for you and ensure all the connections are hooked up correctly. They can also advise you if it's more serious or fatal.

Yes, it seem that ur power supply just burned and it is very much possible that ur whole PC except for power supply hasn't died.
but it is also possible that all components of ur PC including ur hard disk are burned, in that case u can't get any info back.
