The only way to make it look better is to cut out that piece of carpet using a carpenters square and a razor knife.
If there is a closet in the room or some other location that isn't noticeable to extract a piece of carpet the same size as the piece of carpet removed cut one out of that location just a little larger then the "iron hole" you removed.
Carefully fit that new piece to the hole , blend the fibers and glue down

I would try the usual stain removers first - just to see if they lessen the dark color any. (Resolve is usually the best...)
However, once you've eliminated that possibility, you might try trimming the top edge of the carpet very carefully - your goal is only to remove the burned fibers, so you'll have to be careful not to cut too deep. If you do, the cuts will show up as badly as the burned spot.
You might want to check with a local carpet cleaner and see what they might recommend, but it sounds like the damage is done.
I would say barring a throw rug, a large plant in a floor planter, or some other item that could be placed over this, that you will have to replace the carpet. But attempting a little cosmetic work first can't hurt at this point!
Good luck to you and your mom!
ps - as for cutting out and replacing a tiny piece of carpet - unless you can find carpet from the same dye lot as the carpet that was originally installed, it won't match. And the seams WILL show regardless, so I would address this option with a professional carpet store before going any further with this.

Depending on how deep it is, you may be able to trim the tips of the carpet with a pair of scissors. I've done it where someone dropped a cigarette or match, but you are talking about a much greater area. It's worth a try.
Being a mom, I can say yes, she will probably go mental, but she'll be alright!

Make lots of other burns across and pretend it's a deliberate pattern?
Or failing that, either cover it up or get a new carpet, there's no way to reverse that process.
