The sciatica is one of the most important nerves in the lower half of the body. I cannot stress that enough. If that nerve has been damaged then the muscles are not going to get the impulses they need to function properly. Therefore, the muslces are going to shrink from inadequate usage. This is called atrophy.
Besides seeing a doctor I would say to suggesst to your cousin that he walk as much as possible to regain muscle control before atrophy of the muscle becomes so bad that his leg is completely useless.
Like I said before, I cannot stress enough that the sciatic nerve is the most important nerve in the lower half of the body. I had a similar incident with a disk herniation. It wasn't the sciatic but a different one. But, I am having a similar problem with my leg becuase I cannon use my left leg the same as I have up until now. I understand your problem completely.
Honestly if you would like to speak to me more about this you can e-mail me @ Sharpshoot625@cs.com Please identify yourself in the subject. Or, you can IM me on AIM @ Fanoitaliano11. I would actually love to talk to you if your interested.

RE:

his left leg is much thinner than his right leg. What should we do now besides see a doctor and what could the problem be?

Your comments that the left leg is now much thinner suggests to me that the gunshot injury occurred quite a while ago. Any repair to the sciatic nerve would have best been done immediately after the injury.
Progress has been made in nerve repair over the past few decades, but your cousin would have to consult a specialist to get a reliable answer whether further surgery would be helpful. I personally am not optimistic.
Muscle wasting is common after nerve damage, which is probably why the leg is thinner. To prevent further deterioration he should see a physiatrist, a doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

I've been battling sciatica for close to a decade, after a minor car accident, and I had tried everything the doc threw at mepills, injections, special mattresses This guide was extremely eye opening and within one week of the regimen you gave me I can barely feel any discomfort. You have no idea how much of a relief it is to be finally getting rid of a pain I've had to bear for so many years.
