To some extent, labeling is necessary. Labeling is to help our mind signify emotions from each other, actions from each other, people from each other. Putting a label on a relationship is quite necessary, what the label IS may differ from person to person, but every relationship DOES have a label whether someone chooses to admit it or not.

People use "labels" to categorize, to sort, and to organize things.
In relationships, we use "labels" to help us understand ourselves, our motivations, and our expectations--as well as those of the people with whom we partner.
Its perfectly normal--and everybody does it. I would go so far as to "label"as liars all of these folks who claim they never use labels.

It gives them a sense of security and something to call their 'partner' to their family & friends. To some, image is everything! I'm not that way though, I could care less.

The media companies have trained us to categorise ourselves and others in order to show us how we 'don't measure up'. This makes it very easy to get people to buy things that they wrongly believe will make them happy.
