usually a compliment or two, it tends to lift people up a bit and get them to talking a little more. if the conversation isnt going anywhere before that.

Usually I throw in something random, like "You know, I've never eaten fetal pig stew before, but I've heard it's delicious." Then the person I'm talking to stares at me, going 'WTF?' From there it gets really, really interesting.
