You mention "steroids and cheat-codes" which are really 2 separate issues. In the case of steroid use, it's the almighty dollar. The money that can be gotten (notice I didn't say "earned") by a professional athlete now is almost insane. Millions and millions for signing bonuses, endorsements, as well as actually performing in their chosen sport. Sports (professional and amateur) in America has gotten blown out of any proportion at all, with a "win at any cost" mentality. Children as young as 8 and 9 are being taught this philosophy when playing organized T-Ball and Pop Warner football. And, sadly, professional athletes are treated as some sort of "demi-God" with no responsibility for their actions. In the rare instance when a pro athlete is actually caught doing something wrong, many times the punishment hardly fits the crime, but there are exceptions (Michael Vick comes to mind). He might as well have gone out and hung himself, because his days as a player and as a possible role model are over...he had endorsement contracts that were worth millions, now he's been dropped by all former sponsors. Barry Bonds will be nothing more than an asterisk in the baseball record book, with a record that is totally tainted. Of course, given his total disdain for the sports fan's who supported him throughout his career, I'm sure he could care less. Regarding cheat codes, I think it's the "instant gratification" society that we live in. Computer gaming has always had hacks and cheats available, even the old 8-bit Nintendo system had the "Game Genie" which allowed the importation of codes etc. to make the various games easier. Today's computer games are incredibly complex, and without the cheat codes, could literally take months to beat. Time and patience are required, and both of these things are in short supply nowadays. I have to admit that I've used some of the different codes to make things easier in certain games (Diablo 2 comes to mind). And, to a degree, I suppose that this is OK, as long as you are able to separate reality from what should be a harmless past-time......real life (unfortunately) has no "reset" button......

It's all part of the "now" culture. People don't want to have to wait, practice or work for ANYTHING, they want it now - and if that means cheating or "selling your soul" (to loan companies for instance) then so be it.
