A) Your friends are jerks who can't see past their own interests to acknowledge yours.
B) They might be gay. Since they seem so willing to accuse you of being gay from poetry of all things (if you were listening to Spice Girls or Cher, I could understand), well then they seem pretty darn insecure of themselves and their own sexuality.
I know that sounds like a grand generalization but you'd be surprised how many people I've known who constantly say "that's SO gay!" or "you're such a fag" and turns out..they've been doing some gay things themselves. Politicians are a great example. (That's not an insult by the way. Its an example of people condemning and slandering something and then participating in it themselves.)
Nothing is wrong with poetry. You like it, keep at it. If your "friends" can't deal with that, then they're not "friends" at all.
p.s. I like the above comment of "songs are poetry". very nice

Homophobia, fear, and ignorance.
You could be the roughest, toughest cow-wrangler west of the Mississippi, but heaven forfend if you like the wrong food, wear the wrong shirt, like a song from a play, etc.
I know someone whose orientation was questioned b/c he knew the difference between purple and lavender. He knew b/c he used Crayola crayons during playtime with his toddler daughter.
Then when people found out he was a stay-at-home dad....then they REALLY thought he might be gay, even though he is a huge, muscular brute.

It was associated with fops and decadents in the late 19th century (Oscar Wilde etc), who lived a very camp lifestyle. It's never really shaken off that reputation. You could always say to them that rappers are poets, try calling THEM homosexual and you can find out how good your matrix style bullet dodging is.

You better get some names ready of famous poets who were heterosexual. Trying to explain why , would lead into other arguments. Just keep it to yourself and the people who care about you.

They don't sound like friends to me. They sound like judgmental fools who have about as much of a worldview as your common worm.
