This may be because you have a lot of processes running on startup.

To check this and change it, in the start menu point to run and type in msconfig. Point to the startup tab. If the list of checked items is more than about 15 this could easily be the problem. You will probably be able to recognize a few of these by looking at the names eg zlclient is zoneAlarm firewall. out of the ones you recognize think whether you would want them running at startup. eg zoneAlarm you would but windows live messenger you would not. Others you are not sure about you try googling to see what people say.

Its always worth defragmenting and running virus/spyware scans as well. If you are low on disk space this can cause the system to run slow. And one last thing, if you enter task manager(ctrl alt delete) and check the proccesses tab and look at the cpu for everything running you can be suspitious of anything using more than 20. but be careful before ending as this can cause a system crash. if you find anything running this high google it and take suggested action.

I hope this helps you. I am currently without my laptop altogether as my dad spilled coffee on it.
